Budget Development and Guidance
The budget is an indispensable part of any sponsored project proposal. It tells the sponsor how you plan to use the funds you are requesting of them. Yet developing a budget can, for some, be a stressful aspect of the development and submission process. Often, there is confusion about how to calculate one’s effort, how to estimate travel expenses, just what are F&A costs—and where to even start.
In this section, you will find general information about how to begin creating a budget for your proposal, including:
- Explanations of basic budget elements (salaries, travel, equipment, etc.)
- Tips for writing a budget narrative/justification
- A helpful budget checklist
- Examples of agency-specific budgets and budget justifications
There is also an explanation of Facilities & Administrative (F&A)/Indirect Costs.
Additionally, there are relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines specific to constructing budgets for proposals submitted at Appalachian, with helpful information about items such as:
- Time and effort
- Fringe benefits
- Faculty buyout and supplemental compensation
- Student work and tax information
- Cash matching and cost sharing
You will also find internal budget templates to help you calculate costs accurately and appropriately.
