Research Protections - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
The IACUC is a federally-mandated university committee responsible for maintaining a quality program of animal care in a research and teaching environment. Faculty, staff, veterinarians and members of the community serve on the IACUC.
Before beginning a research or teaching activity with animals, the IACUC must review and approve activities that involve nonhuman vertebrate animals, regardless of funding, which take place on Appalachian’s campus or are undertaken by Appalachian faculty, staff or students. The IACUC reviews activities with nonhuman vertebrate animals to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and our Animal Welfare Assurance. All nonhuman vertebrate animal care and use at Appalachian is subject to IACUC oversight regardless of funding.

Training
All persons using nonhuman vertebrate animals in research and/or teaching are required to take the online training for lab animal welfare from the University of Miami's Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). All individuals on the research team and instructors who will handle live, nonhuman vertebrate animals must, at a minimum, complete the “Working with the IACUC” training program offered by CITI. Principal Investigators (PIs) may require members of the research team to complete additional courses. IACUC members must also complete CITI training.
Beginning August 31, 2009, the IACUC will not review an “Application for Use of Animals in Research and Teaching” until the required online CITI training has been completed for all individuals identified on the application including faculty, staff, students, and collaborators from other institutions conducting activities with nonhuman vertebrate animals at Appalachian State University. This online training replaces the previous “hard copy” Animal User’s Training Program and certification exam. In addition, all individuals using nonhuman vertebrate animals must read the Basic Health and Safety Information found within the online training. Click here for instructions for completing the CITI training.
Request for Review
All individuals planning to conduct activities involving nonhuman vertebrate animals must submit the Application for Use of Animals in Research and Teaching. Since the IACUC includes faculty members, reviews conducted during the summer months will require more time than during the academic year.
Researchers must submit one electronic copy to iacuc@appstate.edu and a signed copy of the last page of the Application for Use of Animals. The signed copy may be sent electronically or as hard copy to the IACUC, Research and Graduate Studies, John E. Thomas Building.
Note: PDF files with entry fields may be saved to your computer and then completed. If you have Adobe Professional, information entered into the form can be saved.
