URC Grant Application Process

The mission of the University Research Council is to stimulate, encourage, and support research across all segments of the University community.  The URC is committed to a broad and inclusive definition of research, including both pure and applied research as well as scholarly creative endeavors.

Each year a limited amount of funds generated from the indirect / overhead funds from extramural grants and contracts are used to support faculty research activities with grant awards of up to $5,000. It is the responsibility of the University Research Council to solicit and evaluate research proposals from the faculty, and to make recommendations to the Dean and Chief Research Officer regarding the funding of the proposals. Recent Recipients

Guidelines for Proposals

The Council encourages all tenured or tenure-track faculty members to submit proposals for funding consideration.  Each proposal received will be considered on its individual merit.

Proposals should define a project appropriate to research in the discipline of the originating faculty member. The methodology and plans for dissemination of findings should be designed and clearly stated in accord with accepted procedures in that discipline. All components of the application, including the form and required supporting materials must be received in full by the deadline to be considered.

Certain types of proposals will not be considered for funding by this mechanism.  Since this Council has the objective of encouraging peer or professionally reviewed research and creative activity and the seeking of extramural funding for those endeavors, Council funds will not be allocated for instructional projects or for costs of dissemination of research/creative activities.

Limitations

Certain limitations exist regarding the use of funds allocated by this committee:

    1. Faculty members may be associated with only one proposal during any funding cycle.
    2. Funds may be used to purchase supplies, travel, equipment, postage, and/or processing services for the conduct of research as stated in the funded proposal. Faculty who wish to change the budget will be required to complete a budget revision form for review.
    3. Funds may NOT be used for dissemination of research.
    4. Funds may NOT be used for faculty salary.
    5. The award period is for 12 months from the date of the award notification. All expenditures will follow Appalachian State University and Research and Graduate Studies policies regarding purchase and travel and must be placed through Research and Graduate Studies.
    6. Projects which are proprietary in nature are subject to the Appalachian State University Intellectual Property Policy.
    7. Proposals from past recipients who have failed to submit end‑of‑project reports will not be considered.
    8. Graduate theses and dissertations are not eligible for funding.
    9. Instructional projects are not eligible for funding.
    10. Members of the University Research Council may submit proposals, but cannot serve on the review board for that review cycle if they do so.
    11.  All items purchased remain the property of Appalachian State University.  The disposition of equipment upon completion of the project must be in compliance  with the procedures outlined in Section IV of these guidelines.
    12.  Following two URC awards, individuals must seek or obtain external funding  prior to applying for future URC funding.

Review Process

Non-administrative members of the URC will serve on disciplinary standing committees (STEM, arts/humanities, social science/education/business) that will function as review panels for proposal review so that -- for example -- science proposals are reviewed by STEM faculty and theatre proposals are reviewed by arts/humanities faculty. Committee recommendations will go to the full URC for a vote to determine the URC grant recipients.
