The Office of Research Protections promotes the responsible conduct of research at Appalachian by administering the following programs:
- Human Research Protection Program and the Institutional Review Board (IRB): The Human Research Protection Program and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) review research activities with human participants conducted under the auspices of Appalachian State University.
- Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC): The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviews research, teaching and exhibition activities that involve vertebrate animals.
- Radiation Safety Program: The Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety Council reviews activities with radioactive materials and radiation producing machines to ensure safe conduct.
- Export Controls Policy: The purpose of export controls is to restrict the dissemination of technology, goods, and information to foreign nationals, countries, banned entities, and sanctioned companies. Exporting information without taking the necessary precautions poses a serious security risk to the U.S. and could result in strict criminal and civil penalties.
